"Logansteno: Bought a VW?" (logansteno)

I’d do anything to have my M3 back. I’ve regretted selling it since the day I did so, and feel absolutely no emotion towards the S10 despite my best efforts.
Rust, ugly headlights, automatic, constant judgement, and all. I just want my dream car back.

Wait...they made 4 door E36 M3s?

He should’ve gotten a E46 M3, or if that’s out of the price range, then an E46 330Ci would have actually been a lot better than an E36 4 door automatic M3.

Well I eventually returned to my model of choice... The heart wants what it wants -- just make sure you buy a better one this time. Remember why you sold it. That’s what I always told myself. Remember WHY you sold it...

Something around 7000 of them for the US market. It was made to fill the gap between the E34 and E39 M5s from my understanding.

What I always get pissed at myself about is by the time I sold the damn thing I had fixed 95% of the reasons I wanted to sell it.

Or just swap in a manual. Nothing wrong with the 4-door M3's. The weight was within a few pounds of the coupes. There is also some that believe the 4-doors have a slightly stiffer chassis.

As they age it does that. Most every one I’ve seen is like that.

Well this is a pure hindsight is 20-20 scenario. I remember you being particularly frustrated with it and you checked out. You can’t really look back and kick yourself for how you were feeling. You could basically tear your entire life apart on anything.
I think for a car like *that* it needs to be a second vehicle. In other words, the S10's purpose is so that the inconveniences of the M3 will be completely dismissed, because you’ll always have a reliable backup vehicle.

Aww bummer.
Still, there’s still a good few of them out there. Plenty of opportunities to make the same mistakes again ;)

Just as Zoidberg said, buy another one, just with Manuel this time.
Take your time, save some money so that you can get a better example, and even when you are ready to pull the trigger, take your time. There may not be many on the market at any given time, but if you wait THE ONE will come. No need to jump on the first one.
That’s why my E61 hunt is taking so long. At first I was just watching the market to get a feel for prices. Then I noticed that when some cars sold it made me sad whereas others I barely noticed. So now I know which specific colour/trim/interiour/options/MY/mileage/price/seller/service history combo I want and where I could make compromises and what is non-negotiable. Seems almost impossible in a used car, and sounds more like I should factory order a new one. But they are out there.
Just like your S10, my Honda is O.K. to drive I just don’t enjoy it that much, it’s a tool that does its job. So I can take my time waiting for the right one to be sold somewhat locally, and not settle for a compromise.

There lies my other problem, the S10 was a heat of the moment decision and there’s so many things about it I don’t like. Its to the point where I’m reminded why I wanted out of the Safari so bad. Everything about it is unrefined and feels straight out of the 80s.
I am genuinely awful at this whole car buying thing.

Not even close. I am also a firm believer BMW cant build a reliable engine with more than one bank of cylinders.

I drove a similar Sonoma for 2 years for work and I pretty much hated it. I switched to a Ranger that was 10 years older and it was a considerable improvement.
I might suggest you try something new (not GM), or maybe something a little better (e46?)

The bad thing is when you miss a car and you’re reason for selling it was “um....idk, I was bored”

Eh, the S62 is pretty decent. I talked with a guy with one with around 150k miles that has been his daily driver for years. No problems other than stuff he caused, and routine maintenance.

I’ve driven Rangers of similar vintage and didn’t like it either so I’m thinking I just don’t like how trucks drive.
What draws me to GM now mainly is that I work in a place full off specialized tools to fix them should they break. Same idea for E36s as I have a couple specialized tools and a repair manual I got when I had the M3. Basically I like to stick with what I’m comfortable with, which happens to be shit...

Why did you sell your M3
Rico
> Logansteno: Bought a VW?

I thought part of the reason you sold it was because it had gotten you into some speed trouble and you found the truck to be less likely to get you into trouble + utility.

You got spoiled by the refinement found inside ze Germans! I am the same way whenever I get in another vehicle. Whether it’s material refinement or driving.

I did have a tendency to speed in the BMW, but I do in the S10 too so it isn’t the car that’s the problem obviously lol
Somehow the truck is less useful to me save the when I need to move my toolbox once every 8 weeks. I didn’t realize how often I move more than one other person. Back seats are useful.

By the time I sold it, two blown out speakers, a tear in the drivers seat, ugly aftermarket headlights, and some questionable bodywork. The bodywork is what scared me out of it mostly.
When I bought it though, oh boy. Lots of things.

I’m never bothered by interior materials because the E36 interior is a joke. Driving refinement though, oh yeah..

German cars. They make you hate them every time they go wrong, but when they’re working, they’re terrific. You’ll get another one eventually.

In case it’s of any encouragement...maybe blind luck but so far we’ve owned 3 E36's including the SO’s 1993 325i, of which she’s the original owner and that we still have; and two others that were 1-owner cars with good maintenance history, including a 1999 M3 (also still have), and — again maybe just luck — with routine maintenance tbh all they’ve ever needed was routine maintenance

To be fair, mine had a rough life from previous owners. Once I sorted their screwups out it really was never more unreliable than any other car.
